I’d never heard of this book until Amanda Nelson at Book Riot described it as a YA fantasy with a story that was “the opposite of Harry Potter”. That was enough of a hook for me. I’ve read 5 pages and I’m eagerly anticipating my lunch break so I can dig deeper. It’s the first in a series, so if I love it there are plenty more books in the world to explore.

Sent to a boarding school in Ancelstierre as a young child, Sabriel has had little experience with the random power of Free Magic or the Dead who refuse to stay dead in the Old Kingdom. But during her final semester, her father, the Abhorsen, goes missing, and Sabriel knows she must enter the Old Kingdom to find him.

It was first published in 1995, so I’m 20 years behind on this one. You can get the book from Amazon here or Barnes and Noble here.
